Thank you, Michael. An outstanding letter, if I say so myself.
It’ll be a miracle if they actually print it.
I think that the editorship over there is quite fair. The question here is only as to whether or not the editor regards the affair as finished. That is, of course, an editorial decision. But I hope that they do, if only because of your outstanding writing.
Thanks but I don’t like the editorship at the CB Post. I sent a letter in last year that they heavily edited and didn’t exactly reflect the nature of the original letter and a letter sent as a reply to someone who had responded to my letter was not printed. Although I must say I am still considering getting it delivered out here, it would be two days late but it might be worth it for nothing but Shermans Laggoon.
So are you going to respond to the fellow who offered to debate with you? That could be interesting!
Hi. I guess that you are in Halifax, still, but in Detroit by the time you read this. No, I won’t respond. His letter rather misses the point, as does my old friend Valerie’s. But the responses have been instructive, or at least confirming. To most people this issue is now as forbidden as it was according to my father, all those years ago. People simply ought not to talk about it — for Dad, too shameful, for these others, well … my mind is made up and so I don’t want anyone to unsettle me.
Sorry. Can’t do that.
I see.
Yeah, still at the Halifax airport, though I suppose they’ll start loading the airplane soon.
Hi. It appears that Mr MacKinlay is a lawyer in Glace Bay. The difficulty about debating him is that he jumps from somebody’s imprisonment 40 years ago for homosex activity, to a necessary acceptance of that way of life. Of course, this is a false dichotomy. I can’t see the point of imprisoning guys who want to do it with other guys. But the alternative is not a ready embrace and even commendation of that life-style. So, going by his letter, there really isn’t anything to debate. If he wants to write me here and open up the conversation at a more meaningful level, I will allow him to post a lengthy essay to get us going.
Mr MacKinlay? Your serve.
(Now I’m in Detroit. Stuck here for an extra two hours due to an airplane delay. Nothing says “yay, fun” quite like sitting around DTW.)
No imprisonments in 40 years? If I were them, I’d call that good progress.
Yep, that is progress, and I most certainly affirm it.
Have a nice time in Detroit. I am working hard … a dog’s life. You know, I would like to try Bilbo’s life.
Eating, sniffing and getting belly-rubs, oh that is the life for me.
Oh to be Bilbo right now . . . (I might look like him tomorrow, passed out in my cubicle).
Michael, your letter is outstanding. Please send it in. Don’t worry about what the editors might do. It’s like wanting to ask a girl for a date- if you don’t ask her, you know for sure you won’t get the date.
Thanks for the encouragement. The letter has been sent, the original copy has been posted here to ensure no confusion if the paper edits it. David it is up to you to let us know if it has been printed.
I shall advise you as soon as I am able, when I see the letter in CBP.
Thank you very much. If it is printed maybe you could scan it so we can see how badly they corrupt it.
Let’s hold the pessimism until the occasion arises.
When it comes to Cape Breton my optimism is best left for the birds. I am sorry but I have become disassociated with the place. I left running and I am not sure I would come back for anything less than a position at CBU. I will be back for 18 days in May, wedding of my uncle, and that will probably be the last visit for a long time. I owe you a lunch and I fully expect to pay you back for it when I am there. Shall we say May 6 at 2pm at Joe’s or maybe Goody’s. Mmmmmmm….Goody’s they do a good steak. Anywho I will try to save the pessimism for tomorrow.

Look for this soon, although me thinks it shall not be printed.
I read with interest the reponses to Dr. David Mullan’s letter to the editor. I especially enjoyed the part about our Supreme Court jailing a man for being homosexual, forty years ago. I am a CBU graduate and a former student of Dr. Mullan. I may not agree with all of his views on homosexuality but it seems to me that those would call for his resignation are a part of our society that I call unenlightened. I say this because you are very eager to stay the mouths of those who would disagree with your accepted ideologies rather than meet them for debate. You blindly accept the will of your liberally inclined, politically correct need to be inclusive and yet you make no room for discourse on any subject, except the ones you know you can’t force people into submission on. Now Dr. Mullan has tried to get serious debate on issues in the past, ie the cartoon depictions of Mohammed, and was turned down and the sanctioned debate that was supposed to take place was shutdown by that great defender of academic freedom, CBU President, John Harker. Until the ignorant people of Cape Breton are willing to stand up and debate issues instead of hiding from them people such as Dr. Mullan will be the ones that are continually suppressed for the so-called betterment of society.
