CBUFA Fascism?

What follows is an excerpt from CBUFA by-laws. See what I mean about love of power? The union doesn’t even observe its OWN BY-LAWS.

Fascism means never having to say that you are sorry. Don’t like the (by-) laws?

Just ignore them.

Below are the by-laws under which I have belonged to the union for 19 years.

Article 4 Membership
4.1 Any employee member of the academic staff at CBU in any of the categories recognized by the current collective agreements between the CBU Board of Governors and CBUFA is eligible for membership. These are faculty at rank, professional librarians, other specialists, laboratory instructors, clinical associates or teaching assistants.
4.2 Any employee eligible for membership in the CBUFA shall be automatically admitted to membership unless he or she makes application to the employer to have his or her fees directed elsewhere in accordance with the Rand formula.
4.3 Every employee admitted to membership shall remain a member until his or her employment with CBU is terminated or until he or she has submitted written instruction to the Employer to redirect his or her fees.
All members of CBUFA are automatically members of CAUT, NUCAUT, ANSUT and CLC.

Article 5 Fees
5.1 Annual membership fees shall be recommended by the Executive Committee and presented for approval at a regular meeting of the CBUFA.
5.2 Annual fees recommended by the Executive Committee shall provide for payment of dues to CAUT (including the Collective Bargaining Co-op and the Defence Fund), NUCAUT, ANSUT and CLC. Additionally, the fees shall provide for operational funds for CBUFA.
5.3 The annual fee thus established will be deducted automatically from the pay of every potential member of the bargaining unit in accordance with the Rand Formula. Any member of the unit, who for religious or other reasons does not wish to be a member of CBUFA, may redirect the deducted fees to the CBU scholarship fund or to any registered charity upon written application to the employer.

If anyone out there in bloggerland can help me to understand this, please write a comment.

Lloyd–are you out there?

  1. Time to take legal action!

  2. Can’t afford it. The union has more or less unlimited resources. Over 19 years I have contributed probably $12,000.

If they would refund my dues, then I could sue them.

  3. Then I say you keep pestering them until they follow their own rules.

  4. Stay in the union and make every effort to disrupt their activities.
