David Virtue has it. Read it and weep.
Yes, I know about post hoc propter hoc. But the theory works at least at a general level when one reflects upon the fate of culture-conformity Protestantism.
The decline of membership in the mainline denominations in places like Canada most certainly cannot be blamed on changes in attitudes towards homosexuals since much survey data indicates that a primary discontent Canadians have with religions is a perception of a lack of tolerance among religious groups for minorities like gays and lesbians. As to the implication that many mainline denominations favour a “lower view of Scripture than they held before,” I would have to disagree. Most of the mainline denominations by moving towards a more Neo-orthodox approach to scripture that is willing to question literal readings of biblical passages that conflict with our most recent scientific discoveries is not a lowering of a view to scripture. It is an improvement on and necessary clarification of the dangers of a slide of many believers into the apostasy of Biblical literalism. I thank God for the faithful remanant of the mainline churches.

While these (and other) denominations have experienced declining membership and attendance at services, there are far too many variables that could be part of that cause to isolate one as paramount. The most that one can say is that certain churches that have gone into decline also favour a greater openness to gays. You could probably also say that they favour a lower view of Scripture than they held historically. My hunch is that this would be the more likely cause, the scriptures being the Spirit’s “sword”. When a denomination loses its anchor in the Bible, it becomes just another do-good organization that has to compete for members with non-profits and Rotary Clubs.
